Undocumented immigrants have not always had access to compulsory education in the United States. However, due to the landmark Supreme Court case Plyler v. Doe in 1982, immigrants are allowed access to K-12 education. This significantly impacted all immigrant groups, including Latinos. Historically, Puerto Ricans were the largest Hispanic/Latino group in the New York metropolitan area, however the Puerto Rican population in the area began to decrease due to rising cost of living and in turn the overall Hispanic/Latino population began to diversify with increases in other Latino groups. Hispanic/Latino populations in the Northeast Ohio and Western New York areas in particular, tend to be 80-90% Puerto Rican.

Some have argued that the term supports patriarchal bias, is antifeminist, based on political correctness, or criticized it because it is difficult to pronounce. A 2020 study based on interviews with 34 Latinx/a/o students from the US found that they “perceive higher education as a privileged space where they use the term Latinx. Once they return to their communities, they do not use the term.”
The definition of “Hispanic” has been modified in each successive census. The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission encourages any individual who believes that he or she is Hispanic to self-identify as Hispanic. The United States Department of Labor – Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs encourages the same self-identification. As a result, any individual who traces his or her origins to part of the Spanish Empire may self-identify as Hispanic, because an employer may not override an individual’s self-identification. The Latin gentile adjectives that belong to Hispania are Hispanus, Hispanicus, and Hispaniensis.

In other words, a respondent could choose both “Hispanic or Latino” and “Not Hispanic or Latino”. This census acknowledged that “race categories include both racial and national-origin groups.”

This sense of displacement and loss would later be visible in Mendieta’s incredible artworks.
Puerto Ricans migrated in search of higher-wage jobs, first to New York City, and later to other cities such as Chicago, Philadelphia and Boston. The absolute increase in the size of the Puerto Rican population of the New York metropolitan area between 2010 and 2016 roughly approximates the total Puerto Rican population of the Orlando Metropolitan Area, which enumerated over 320,000 in 2013. The Puerto Rican populations of the Orlando and Philadelphia metropolitan areas approximate each other in following a distant second and third only to the New York metropolitan area in size. Important Puerto Rican institutions have emerged from this long history.
In terms of media portrayal, Hollywood has invested a lot of time and money to develop a general notion of “Latinidad” because marketers, advertisers and media content producers have found that they are a very bankable demographic, thus turned “Latinidad” and Latina/o culture and identity to a commodity. What is problematic about this is when creating this general notion, the diversity within this demographic becomes suppressed and flattened in a demographic that is very heterogeneous just so marketers, advertisers and media content producers can communicate their version of “authentic” racial identity to consumers. Consequently, this opens the space for stereotypes to be created and perpetuated. The term has drawn criticisms for its invented roots, in addition to its perceived corruption of the Spanish language.

Along with the increase in independence amongst these young women, there is a diminution in the power of vergüenza (“shame”) in many of the relations between the two sexes. Although many Latina women in the homeland as well as older Latina women in the United States reinforce this dynamic by not wanting a man who is a sinvergüenza (“shameless one”), some Latinx youth accept the label of sinvergüenza and now wear it proudly. Feeling caught between two distinct societies causes youth to “meditate between the two cultures and ambivalence toward feeling a lack of vergüenza”, resulting in a group of youth who celebrate being sinvergüenza while still acknowledging the concept of vergüenza within a part of their increasingly composite culture. Along with feeling that they are neither from the country of their ethnic background nor the United States, a new identity within the United States is formed called latinidad.
